About Us

Our Promise

We train builders, makers, inventors and entrepreneurs.

Technological change is accelerating. Many parents feel that traditional schools will not adequately prepare their children for the careers of their future. This feeling is particularly acute for parents currently working in STEAM fields, as they see the disconnect between skills that are needed and what their children will learn.

Schools are often constrained by slow-changing state standards, school board requirements, existing infrastructure and available personnel. If they are exposing children to these subjects it is in a very restricted, ‘sampling’ fashion.

Steamoji aims to fill this gap by producing a structured, and reinforcing, project curriculum designed to provide 400 hours of student activity.

Build to Solve™!

Our Story

Guided by a
maker-mindset.

At school, my older son was often afraid of trying new things for fear of making a mistake, of being wrong. I thought this was terrible as I haven't achieved anything significant on my first attempt. It usually takes a series of attempts - of trial, failure, success and iteration - to build anything of significance.

I wanted to expose my two sons to design thinking and maker skills to address this, but struggled to find a solution. I was overwhelmed by the number of project options available on Amazon (try searching for 'STEM kits'!). My sons enjoyed projects at local maker spaces over Summer camps, but where was the progression when they showed an interest in learning more?

An entreprenuer at heart, I started working with a group of other parents to try to come up with a solution. This is how Steamoji was born.

“Quite simply, I am building Steamoji to better prepare my sons to proactively take on the challenges of their future.”

Let's get building!

Frequently Asked Questions

Who created Steamoji?

Steamoji was founded by Hank Horkoff, a father with 2 pre-teenage sons. He wanted to expose them to STEAM skills. He tried doing it himself, but got overwhelmed when searching for ‘STEM kits’ on Amazon with thousands of options. He tried Summer Camps at local maker spaces, got his children excited, but then had no way for them to continue to nurture that interest. An entrepreneur himself at heart, he recruited a talented group of other parents (sharing similar frustrations) and a network of subject matter experts to bring Steamoji to life.

Who is Steamoji for?

The core Steamoji 'Build to Solve' program is designed for children aged 5-14. We also offer Steamoji Junior for younger children and Steamoji Ignite mentorship program for older children.

What is in the Steamoji curriculum?

Our curriculum is comprised of 400 hours, broken down into 45 structured and reinforcing courses, or missions as we refer to them. The missions are divided into 4 subject pathways of fabrication, physical computing, engineering and digital arts.

Is Steamoji available for adults?

No. Steamoji World is only available for young apprentices. Older teenagers are encouraged to become facilitators and can also learn the same skills.

Why should my children become makers?

Technological change is accelerating. Many parents feel STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) are important to help prepare their children for the careers of their future, but see schools more focused on traditional studies. These 'maker' skills will provide a solid training for your child to adapt to this rapid change by becoming a builder, maker, inventor or entrepreneur of the future.
