What is steamoji?

A place for children to create
a sense of meaning and
master future-facing skills.

Steamoji is a STEM maker academy for kids aged 5-14 that
trains builders, makers, inventors and entrepreneurs.

Skill pathways

A new learning experience.

Technological change is accelerating. Many parents recognize STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) are fundamental in preparing their children for the careers of the future, but see schools more focused on traditional studies. Steamoji’s 400-hour curriculum is designed to fill the gap in a structured and reinforcing fashion across each subject pathway. Students are taught basic skills, then encouraged to practically apply them in the spirit of “Build to Solve™”.

Why steamoji Works

Steamoji students will be ahead of the curve by gaining essential skills for the 21st-century while learning how to tackle their generation’s global challenges.

While there are other camps introducing STEAM concepts, there is no other
structured program like Steamoji which takes an elementary school child through
400 hours of reinforcing projects over a 5-year time period.

A CONFIDENT, CAN DO MINDSET

Exposing children to new technology skills helps give them confidence to tackle new challenges. An open mindset is encouraged to always try, adapt and try again.

GUIDANCE FROM SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS

Subject matter experts demonstrate and provide guidance on developing foundational skills. Facilitators supervise to help overcome any challenges.

Real skills your child will use

The focus is on teaching foundational skills, then encouraging apprentices to imagine, create and improve their own solutions.

DIRECTOR OF Kerrisdale

Gregg Sayer

Meet Gregg "Gmoji" Sayer, our dynamic Academy Director at Steamoji Kerrisdale. Gregg is married with three children and is a former sports tech entrepreneur, a former PAC president/chair, a former digital marketing strategist, a UBC Sauder alum and a prolific - and we mean prolific - Dad Joke dispenser. Ask him about his Great-Uncle, Trevor Wadley, a bonafide genius / Master Maker.

“At Steamoji Kerrisdale, families can count on my commitment that they will always find an academy that is welcoming and full of wonder, fun, flow and laughter. As a father of three children, I am 100% on board with Steamoji’s compelling vision to train the next generation of builders, makers, inventors and entrepreneurs. If I could magically blanket the world with future-facing STEM skills and a growth mindset, I would, but I’m going to first start with 1,700 square feet and a community of bright apprentices right in the heart of beautiful Kerrisdale.”

Incoming! In this camp, Apprentices will become engineers as they work in teams to build the strongest catapult and tallest tower that they can. To conquer the challenge, they'll learn about levers and mechanical advantage, building techniques and balance. As well as becoming masterful engineers, they’ll tap into their creative side and make colorful birds and mascots to launch from the catapult. On the last day, teams will face off to try and knock down their opponents' towers before their tower is tumbled, too!

Introducing our first Steamoji x CircuitMess STEM camp...

Meet Spencer - your new talkative buddy that lights up when it sees you, answers your questions and even has a joke ready when you want a laugh!

Kids will learn everything they need to know to turn a pile of parts into their very own customized voice assistant that they'll take home at the end of the week:

  • Learn building skills such as soldering and parts assembly
  • Code your voice assistant using Python
  • Find out about the “internet of things”
  • Fabricate your own 3D printed parts to personalize your new pal
  • Solve problems and share ideas with other makers

Let’s Get Building!

Please note - this camp is for kids ages 10 and up. Camp price includes a take-home “Spencer” kit (retail value of $160).

Art history meets game strategy in this camp. Steamoji Junior Apprentices (ages 5-7) will invent and build their own art-inspired mini-games, merging artistic skills with critical thinking to combine the gallery with the game world. Every day is a creative bonanza where their imaginations set the scene and game design brings the structure, resulting in a collection of fun games that they’ve plotted and crafted themselves. From pens and markers to sculpting and LED lights, Apprentices will use classic and contemporary design principles as a springboard for their own unique artwork. It’s a place where math and art meet up to make magic. So – who’s ready to play?!

Skills

  • Imagine designing, coding and fabricating your very own security safe to protect your treasures from nosy siblings or curious parents. Well, it’s time to ‘unlock’ your potential! In this camp, kids will combine physical computing skills with applied design skills and their own creativity to build a working electronic safe, complete with a digital keypad, a microcontroller, servo motors and electronics.
    Campers will:
Learn how to program a microcontroller (micro:bit) to control a digital PIN keypad and locking mechanism.
    • Fabricate the safe’s enclosure out of cardboard, laser-cut wood or 3D printed materials.
    • Gain hands-on experience with 3D design software, such as TinkerCAD and Gravit Designer (now Corel Vector).
    • Demystify electronics by wiring up servos, light sensors, power sources, buzzers, resistors, LEDs and other components.
    • Collaborate with their fellow makers to share ideas and crack challenges.
Note: Given the high cost of electronic components, there will be an optional take-home fee of $60 if a camper wishes to take home their creation for ‘safe’-keeping.
